Medical school to provide continuing medical education for physicians

Scranton, Pennsylvania – The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC) has been surveyed by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and awarded accreditation for two years as a provider of continuing medical education for physicians. ACCME accreditation seeks to assure both physicians and the public that continuing medical education activities provided by TCMC meet the high standards of the Essential Areas, Elements and Policies for Accreditation as specified by the ACCME.

“This is another great achievement for TCMC that demonstrates our commitment to achieving and maintaining excellence in medical education,” stated Lois Margaret Nora, MD, JD, MBA, TCMC interim president and dean. “By achieving ACCME accreditation, TCMC can now offer AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ to physicians seeking the highest level of continuing medical education programs by the ACCME global standards,” Dr. Nora continued.

During this period of accreditation, TCMC will keep current on its compliance with ACCME’s requirements and modify its practices, if necessary, to ensure continued compliance when new policies are released. In spring of 2013, TCMC’s CME program will be reviewed to ensure continued compliance with ACCME’s requirements for continuing medical education.

This decision is based on a demonstration of compliance in Level 1 Criteria (C1-3 and C7-12) and the accreditation policies. The ACCME rigorously evaluates the overall continuing medical education programs of institutions according to standards adopted by all seven sponsoring organizations of the ACCME. These are: the American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Hospital Association, the American Medical Association, the Association for Hospital Medical Education, the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Council of Medical Specialty Societies, and the Federation of State Medical Boards of the U.S., Inc.
