Summer enrichment programs provide community health day and open house.

Scranton, Pennsylvania – More than 80 students of The Commonwealth Medical College’s (TCMC) Regional Education Academy for Careers in Health – Higher Education Initiative (REACH-HEI) will host a community health fair and open house on Wednesday, August 3, 9am - 12pm at TCMC, 525 Pine Street, Scranton. Health screenings and information on: blood pressure, hand hygiene, heart health, nutrition, yoga, oral health, car seat safety, substance abuse, skin cancer, household safety, CPR, vaccinations and more will be presented. The event is free and open to the public.

TCMC’s REACH-HEI program provides a pathway to health careers for high school, undergraduate and pre-matriculating medical qualifying students in Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA) who are interested in medicine or health related professions. Through REACH-HEI summer/after-school enrichment programs and research internships, economically disadvantaged students receive the education and training needed to successfully enter and graduate from medical or health professions schools.

TCMC received a $2.4 million Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) federal grant to fund the development of the REACH-HEI initiative over three years, serving more than 400 students in NEPA. In partnership with Misericorida University, Luzerne County Community College, East Stroudsburg University, Area Health Education Center Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science and Scranton Area High Schools, TCMC will provide education, research, training and support programs that will cultivate interest and capacity to pursue higher education health science professions in NEPA.
