The Commonwealth Medical College - unique in many ways

Charter Class transitions to third year, Williamsport Regional Campus medical community

Wednesday, June 08, 2020

Williamsport, Pennsylvania – Beginning June 21, 2020, sixteen students of The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC) will relocate full-time to the Williamsport Regional Campus where they will live and train with community-based physicians for their third and fourth years of study. TCMC clinical faculty and their patients will spend the next year teaching the students about internal and family medicine, pediatrics, surgery, psychiatry and obstetrical care.

TCMC students will be learning in physician offices, hospitals and clinics following patients throughout the year to see how care is delivered and learn the various core specialties of medicine. The transition from the classroom to the community is an important phase in the students’ educational program.

TCMC’s Williamsport Regional campus includes hospitals, healthcare facilities and physician practices in Bradford, Tioga, Lycoming, Sullivan, Clinton and Union counties including: Susquehanna Health, Susquehanna Community Health and Dental Clinic, Community Services Group, Evangelical Community Hospital, Guthrie Healthcare System, Jersey Shore Hospital, and Muncy Valley Hospital.

TCMC has established offices in Williamsport where the students will gather weekly to receive career counseling, discuss their experiences and hear experts talk about health care issues. The offices are staffed full-time by TCMC staff and leadership to support the students in their community-based education.

This transition from the study of the basic sciences portion of medicine to clinical health sciences was celebrated during a traditional White Coat Ceremony in May. This rite of passage marked another first in the history of TCMC.

To commemorate the beginning of their clinical rotations and patient care, each medical student of the Williamsport Regional Campus was cloaked with his or her white coat by Keith Shenberger, MD, Associate Dean of Regional Campus Development – Williamsport.

“This event has significant meaning for our medical students who will enter their third year of training and will live and learn to care for patients full-time right here in Williamsport,” said Dr. Shenberger. “The white coat symbolizes the role of the physician and reminds them of why they chose the medical profession – to not only take care of patients but to care for patients – as they embark upon this important phase in their professional training,” Dr. Shenberger continued.

The hands-on experience also reminded physicians-in-training about the importance of compassionate care for the patient.
