The Commonwealth Medical College - unique in many ways

Charter Class transitions to third year, Wilkes-Barre Regional Campus medical community

Wednesday, June 08, 2020

Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania – Beginning June 21, 2020, twenty one students of The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC) will relocate full-time to the Wilkes-Barre Regional Campus where they will live and train with community-based physicians for their third and fourth years of study. TCMC clinical faculty and their patients will spend the next year teaching the students about internal and family medicine, pediatrics, surgery, psychiatry and obstetrical care.

TCMC students will be learning in physician offices, hospitals and clinics following patients throughout the year to see how care is delivered and learn the various core specialties of medicine. The transition from the classroom to the community is an important phase in the students’ educational program.

The Wilkes-Barre Regional Campus includes physician practices, hospitals and healthcare facilities in Carbon, Columbia, Luzerne, Montour, and Schuylkill counties including: Allied Services/John Heinz Institute, Berwick Clinic Company, LLC, Bloomsburg Hospital, Blue Mountain Health System (Palmerton and Gnaden Huetten Campus), Children’s Service Center of Wyoming Valley, Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Hazleton General Hospital, Northeast Counseling Services, Schuylkill Health System, Wilkes-Barre Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Wyoming Valley Healthcare System.

TCMC has established offices in Wilkes-Barre where the students will gather weekly to receive career counseling, discuss their experiences and hear experts talk about health care issues. The offices are staffed full-time by TCMC staff and leadership to support the students in their community-based education.

This transition from the study of the basic sciences portion of medicine to clinical health sciences was celebrated during a traditional White Coat Ceremony in May. This rite of passage marked another first in the history of TCMC.

To commemorate the beginning of their clinical rotations and patient care, each medical student of the Wilkes-Barre Regional Campus was cloaked with his or her white coat by Richard English, MD, Associate Dean of Regional Campus Development – Wilkes-Barre.

“The white coat symbolizes the role of the physician and reminds medical students of why they chose the medical profession – to not only take care of patients but to care for patients – as they embark upon an important phase in their professional training,” said Dr. English.

The hands-on experience also reminded physicians-in-training about the importance of compassionate care for the patient.
