The Commonwealth Medical College - unique in many ways

Charter Class transitions to third year, Scranton Regional Campus medical community

Wednesday, June 08, 2020

Scranton, Pennsylvania – On June 21, 2020, twenty seven students of The Commonwealth Medical College’s (TCMC) Scranton Regional Campus will begin training with community-based physicians for their third and fourth years of study. TCMC clinical faculty and their patients will spend the next year teaching the students about internal and family medicine, pediatrics, surgery, psychiatry and obstetrical care.

TCMC students will be learning in physician offices, hospitals and clinics following patients throughout the year to see how care is delivered and learn the various core specialties of medicine. The transition from the classroom to the community is an important phase in the students’ educational program.

The Scranton Regional Campus includes physician practices, hospitals and healthcare facilities in Lackawanna, Monroe, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming counties including: Allied Services/John Heinz Institute, Community Medical Center, Moses Taylor Hospital, Regional Hospital of Scranton, Pocono Medical Center, and Wayne Memorial Hospital.
This transition from the study of the basic sciences portion of medicine to clinical health sciences was celebrated during a traditional White Coat Ceremony in May. This rite of passage marked another first in the history of TCMC.

To commemorate the beginning of their clinical rotations and patient care, each medical student of the Scranton Regional Campus was cloaked with his or her white coat by Gerald Tracy, MD, Associate Dean of Regional Campus Development – Scranton.
“The symbolic white coat symbolizes the role of the physician and reminds them of their obligation to be a compassionate doctor and the importance of the relationship between them and their patients as they embark upon this important phase in their professional training,” said Dr. Tracy.

The hands-on experience also reminded physicians-in-training about the importance of compassionate care for the patient.
