The Commonwealth Medical College - unique in many ways

Tuesday, May 10, 2020

Scranton, Pennsylvania – Matthew Meyers, a Scranton native and first-year medical student of The Commonwealth Medical College recently received a $3,000 grant from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. The grant will be used to fund a summer internship sponsored by Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital of Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Over the summer, Mr. Meyers will be working with a mobile health clinic named “The Teen Van” that offers free services to local underserved and uninsured adolescents, many of whom are homeless, throughout the San Francisco Bay area. Specifically, he will be working with the clinical team there to implement a nutritional intervention aimed at helping adolescents learn how to make healthier, more informed food choices and better economic choices.

“This is an excellent opportunity for one of our medical students to have a significant impact on a widespread public health issue in a population that truly needs such an intervention,” stated Olapeju Simoyan, MD, MPH, BDS, TCMC assistant professor of family medicine and epidemiology and faculty mentor for the grant project.  “Matthew is an excellent student and very deserving of this grant from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation and I am certain that he will make a difference in helping to improve adolescent eating habits and in so doing, contribute to improving their overall health,” Dr. Simoyan continued.

Dr. Simoyan was also a recipient of a similar grant from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation while a student at Penn State University College of Medicine. The Foundation’s goal is to help physicians-in-training become doctors who combine the high tech skills of cutting edge medicine with the high touch skills of effective communication, empathy and compassion.
