The Commonwealth Medical College Receives $25,000 Grant From PPL Electric Utilities Company

The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC), the region’s new medical school, is pleased to announce that they have received a $25,000 grant from PPL Electric Utilities Company to help fund the new Medical Sciences building.

The future Medical Sciences building will eventually serve more than 500 Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Masters of Biomedical Sciences (MBS) students and 175 full-time equivalent faculty members, plus support personnel.  Located at Pine Street in Scranton, the building will include 185,000 square feet of space for classrooms, student support and research facilities. The building is expected to open in 2011. 

The Commonwealth Medical College is projected to add more than 425 qualified, diverse practicing physicians to Northeastern Pennsylvania during the next 20 years. “This grant from PPL will move us one step closer to our goals by helping to provide a brand new building where generations of students and faculty can experience a student-centered medical education focused on the healthcare needs of the region,” stated President and Dean, Robert D’Alessandri, MD.”  The new medical school is expected to add $70 million to the local economy and create 1, 000 new jobs that directly and indirectly support the school’s operations.

The Commonwealth Medical College is a new medical college opening in August 2009 and expects to accept sixty medical students and thirty Masters of Biomedical Sciences (MBS) students. The College has campuses in Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and Williamsport and currently has over 113 full time employees and over 557 clinical faculty members. For the academic years of 2009 and 2010, students will use temporary facilities on the Lackawanna College campus. The Commonwealth Medical College is dedicated to training the next generation of physicians in a community-based model.
