The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC), the region’s new medical school, is pleased to announce that they have received a $250,000 grant from The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. (NYSE:PNC).

TCMC was created to ease the projected physician shortage in Northeastern Pennsylvania and has a goal of admitting 70% Pennsylvanians who will hopefully stay in the region to practice medicine and care for patients. The College is projected to add 425 qualified, diverse practicing physicians to Northeastern Pennsylvania during the next 20 years. In addition, the new medical school is expected to add $70 million to the local economy and create 1,000 new jobs that directly and indirectly support the school’s operations.

In appreciation for PNC’s generous investment, TCMC will name the Courtyard near the Main Entrance of their future Medical Sciences Building in Scranton the “PNC Courtyard.” This marks the first named space for the school’s Medical Sciences Building. “The PNC Courtyard will provide generations of students and faculty with a place to reflect, study and come together to discuss their research and ideas outside of the laboratories and classrooms,” said Robert D’ Alessandri, MD, President & Dean of The Commonwealth Medical College. “This space will serve as channel to facilitate communication among faculty and students.”

“PNC continuously strives to be a good corporate neighbor by supporting organizations such as The Commonwealth Medical College that ultimately enrich the lives of the people who live and work within our community.” stated Peter Danchak, President of PNC Bank, Northeast PA.

The Medical Sciences Building will eventually serve more than 500 Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Biomedical Sciences (MBS) students and 175 full-time equivalent faculty members, plus support personnel. The permanent site will include 185,000 square feet of space for classrooms, student support space and research facilities. The state-of-the-art facility is expected to be open in 2011.

The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. (NYSE: PNC) is one of the nation’s largest diversified financial services organizations providing consumer and business banking; specialized services for corporations and government entities including corporate banking, real estate finance and assetbased lending; wealth management; asset management and global fund services.
