New Appointees Join the Board of Directors of The Commonwealth Medical College

SCRANTON, PA – The Commonwealth Medical College, a proposed medical school currently in the development phase, has named four community leaders to its Board of Directors.

The four new members are John P. Moses, Murray Ufberg, Esq., Louis DeNaples, and James A. Hallock, MD. Mr. Moses is CEO of ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis and is a resident of Wilkes-Barre. Mr. Ufberg is a partner in the law firm of Rosenn, Jenkins & Greenwald, LLP in Wilkes-Barre. Mr. DeNaples is from Dunmore and is Chairman of the Board of First National Community Bank and Allied Services, Dr. Hallock is President of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) in Philadelphia. All are active in their communities and currently hold board positions on community civic organizations. The initial terms for the new members shall extend through 2011.

The Board of Directors of The Commonwealth Medical College (proposed) is charged with developing institutional strategies, plans and procedures. It is responsible for the stewardship of the institution’s resources, including approval of long range plans, facility plans, capital budgets and annual operating budgets. In addition, the Board works closely with the College’s leadership to guide the institution in fulfilling its regional mission.

“We are very pleased that these busy community leaders have decided to lend some of their expertise to developing the College”, said Robert Wright, MD, chair of the Board of Directors. “Each new member has experience on a board level with higher education and many have health care board level experience as well.” President of TCMC, Robert D’Alessandri, MD added, “Each of these individuals has been generous with their time and ideas for the school, offering informal advice and support over the past months. I am very pleased we will be able to access their ideas more routinely and that they are committed to guiding the College’s development. In addition these new board members bring us a regional and national perspective that is critical for the College to hear and understand. ”

The new board members join current TCMC board members: Denise Cesare of Blue Cross, Linda Thomas, MD, Robert Naismith, PhD, Thomas Karam, Robert Wright, MD and Robert D’Alessandri, MD.

The Commonwealth Medical College is a proposed new, independent medical school in northeastern Pennsylvania dedicated to training the next generation of physicians in a community-based, distributive-model of medical education with clinical faculty at regional campuses which include Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and Williamsport. Focusing on selecting students with a propensity for community service, the school’s unique structure is designed to provide these students with diverse clinical experiences from the very first day of their education. The Commonwealth Medical College has just completed its applications for degree-granting authority from the Pennsylvania Department of Education and for accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.
