At TCMC, we focus our biomedical research and training programs on regional health issues prevalent in northeast Pennsylvania (NEPA), a 16-county region with 1.8 million residents. Analyses of the region reveal an aging population - 17% of residents are over age 65, compared to 13.5% nationally. The profile of disease in the region indicates high levels of some cancers (breast, lung, colorectal, prostate and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma), chronic diseases associated with aging, as well as significant needs in primary care, mental health, and community medicine.

The Office of Research serves to:

  • identify funding agencies that may be interested in supporting research and/or training programs;
  • identify intellectual property and assisting in its development;
  • provide advanced technology to foster research discovery;
  • ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations that govern research;
  • provide biomedical research training programs; and
  • work closely with economic development partners to promote biomedical research industry in the region.

The Office of Research at TCMC assists faculty and staff by providing an infrastructure that promotes research and training success. We are particularly interested in developing and sustaining research projects and training programs that can impact regional patient health and well-being.

TCMC faculty and staff welcome collaborations in the biomedical research and training community. For information, please contact Sonia L. Planey, PhD, Interim Associate Dean for Research.
