At TCMC, we focus our biomedical research and training programs on regional health issues prevalent in northeast Pennsylvania (NEPA), a 16-county region with 1.8 million residents. Analyses of the region reveal an aging population - 17% of residents are over age 65, compared to 13.5% nationally. The profile of disease in the region indicates high levels of some cancers (breast, lung, colorectal, prostate and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma), chronic diseases associated with aging, as well as significant needs in primary care, mental health, and community medicine.
