MBS Program

The Commonwealth Medical College’s (TCMC) Masters of Biomedical Sciences (MBS) degree program is directed at people who are:

  • seeking to strengthen their credentials for application to medical school or a health professions school;
  • seeking a foundation in biomedical sciences to enter a career in public health, scientific research, education or biomedical technology.

We recognize that applications to medical school are highly competitive and many qualified applicants are turned down every year.  The MBS Program provides students with a solid biomedical science foundation and focuses on strengthening student’s candidacy for medical school.  The MBS program also provides an opportunity to explore and prepare for other professional educational opportunities and/or careers in the biomedical or health science fields.

The MBS curriculum has been designed to provide students with a unique, personal and outstanding learning experience to assist them in achieving their career goals.  Small class size and a commitment to student-centered learning are partnered with individualized career and educational planning service.  Other hallmarks of the MBS program include MCAT preparation, course work to help prepare students for medical school, some shared learning activities with the medical students and community health projects. In addition, all MBS students who wish to apply to medical school will be given a simulated medical school interview with feedback to help them prepare for their interviews. We have designed a program to support student success in the MBS program and in the student’s further education.

Students may apply to medical school while enrolled in the MBS program, or after the program has been completed. MBS staff will do everything they can to support the student's application, regardless of when and where students wish to apply. TCMC has a goal of having 10% of MBS graduates who meet the criteria for medical school.  MBS students will be admitted to the subsequent medical school class based on their performance and evaluations in the MBS program as well as on review of their credentials by the medical school Admissions Committee.
